Hunting Camp Creek Wilderness
The valley of Hunting Camp Creek provides unusual opportunities for solitude and a wilderness experience. Hunting Camp Creek Wilderness stretches from ridge top to ridge top, and is traversed by approximately 7.5 miles of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail (A.T., FT #1). Garden Mountain forms the northwestern edge of this secluded area; VA Routes 623, 615 and 610 complete the boundary. Trail information is available on National Geographic-Trails Illustrated Map #787 (Blacksburg-New River Valley). The area exhibits the typical peculiarities of Ridge and Valley geology, with older Silurian sandstone forming the tops of the mountains and younger Devonian shales appearing in the valleys. The slopes are steep to very steep.
