Wonder Mountain Wilderness

Located in the southeast corner of Olympic National Forest, little Wonder Mountain Wilderness extends south roughly in the shape of a triangle. A high ridge encompasses the southern point of the triangle, rising to the abrupt rocky peak of 4,848-foot Wonder Mountain. Below the summit, a heavy forest of western hemlock, Douglas fir, and silver fir reaches northward into the park. Within the Wilderness, the headwaters of McKay Creek and Five Stream emerge from four tiny secluded lakes, the only bodies of water in the area, that bear no names. A thick jungle of alder, willow, and vine maple grows along the creeks.

The line is the average temperature and the bars are average precipitation at Cushman Powerhouse #2, 16 miles from the center point at 21 feet, station USC00451939 in the NOAA monthly climate normals for 1991 to 2020. Precipitation totals about 92 inches a year. The dotted line is average snowfall, about 4 inches a year on the same inches scale. The station sits about 3,600 feet lower than the center point, so temperatures on the ground run cooler.

Large units span more than one climate. The station stands in for the center point, and the outer parts of the boundary can be warmer or colder.
